Kmart Goes Commando on Thanksgiving Sale

There won’t be a Black Friday at all at Kmart this year. Nope. They will open at 6am on Thursday — Thanksgiving Day — and stay open for 41 consecutive hours, despite a clear growing backlash by the public who is protesting on behalf of employees who miss Thanksgiving to work retailers like Kmart, Sears, Macy’s and other now open on Thanksgiving Day.

This might seem like a new thing in American retailing. But Kmart has actually opened at 6am on Thanksgiving since 2010. It’s just that they closed at 4pm and re-opened again at 8pm. Now they are just going full commando on Thanksgiving.

Kmart will not be alone in being open on Thanksgiving Day. Old Navy plans to be open 9am to 8pm. Toys R Us will open at 11:30am and close at 6:30pm.

And nearly everyone else plans for an 8pm opening on Thanksgiving night: Walmart, Sears, Macy’s, Kohl’s and JCPenney.

Kmart famously made news earlier this year by launching the first major Christmas television ad campaign a full 100 days before Christmas.
